Coast Mountain College - Terrace Campus Overview

Coast Mountain College, previously Northwest Community College (NWCC), is an accredited post-secondary institution that serves the rich and diverse communities and learners of BC’s beautiful northwest region.

Established in 1975 in Terrace, BC, Coast Mountain College has five regional campuses serving 34 communities, 21 of which are First Nations communities. The college provides students with innovative programs that lead to sustainable careers for people in the north. Our campuses are located in Hazelton, Haida Gwaii, Smithers, Prince Rupert and Terrace.

CMTN offers college access programs; small class sizes; health and human services programs; online programs; university credit programs; trades foundation and apprenticeship programs. Coast Mountain College also offers innovative and flexible mobile training, reaching communities beyond its campuses.

Coast Mountain College aims to be the college of choice for experiential, place-based learning, allowing students to learn both in the classroom and in the spectacular outdoor spaces that are so unique to this part of Canada.

Terrace Campus

The Terrace campus is thirty acres of beautifully landscaped grounds nestled in the surrounding mountain ranges and approximately five kilometres from downtown. The Terrace campus is located on the traditional unceded territory of the Kitsumkalum First Nation.

With a multitude of walking and biking trails and public transit nearby, downtown is easily accessible to students living on and off campus. For on campus housing we have a brand new building named Wii Gyemsiga Siwilaawksat, which translates to "where learners are content or comfortable", that houses up to 112 students.

Featuring a full service cafeteria with food prepared by students and professional chefs of our culinary programs, the facility is open for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Many special events are also hosted here throughout the year. The Cedar Café is also located at the Terrace campus and offers daily food and coffee specials and ample studying space.

With a recent renewal of our trades training building our students have modern facilities, increased study space and technological improvements to prepare for in-demand careers in the trades. Waap Amgam (House of Cedar) also hosts an airy, light commons area with added study space, breakout rooms and funky furniture. You’ll also find the campus library there.

The campus yurt is located in the middle of the campus courtyard and serves as a teaching lab and innovative space for our classes and meeting space for our campus and wider community.

At the south end of the campus stands Waap Galts’ap, the campus longhouse. The Longhouse is primarily used for student-centered and cultural activities and there are various events hosted there throughout the year.

We enrich the student experience with our unique programs and adventurous delivery. The First Nations Fine Arts program located at the Freda Diesing studio is the only one of its kind in Canada where artists focus on the northern style of West Coast First Nations art. Multiple intensive summer field school programs combine a full semester of learning into just a few weeks where students experience northwest BC’s incredible history, culture and environment. Experiential learning really does bring theory to life.
