Types of IELTS Exam - IELTS Academic & IELTS General Training

IELTS Exam Type
Generally, there are two IELTS exam types available worldwide
- IELTS Academic - When applying to graduate school or a professional program, students must take the IELTS Academic exam .
- IELTS General Training - The IELTS General Training is intended for people who want to move to the English-speaking countries, such as Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, or New Zealand. Other than that, students who want to get engaged in a training or work abroad can also opt for this IELTS exam type.
IELTS Syllabus for General Training and Academic Tests
Listening & speaking sections of both IELTS Academic & IELTS General Training exams are same, but, Reading & writing sections of both exams are different. Candidates who opt for the IELTS academic exam get the topics that goes well with entering the educational & professional institutions. On the other hand, candidates who opt for the IELTS general training exam type get the topics associated with general interests. Therefore, Candidates should be aware about their purpose of taking the exam before opting any of the two IELTS exam types available.
IELTS Exam Fee
Exam fees for both IELTS Academic & General Training exam types is the same and test-takers opting for any of those IELTS exam types must pay the exact exam fees of INR 15,500. This charge covers the cost of the computer-based IELTS test and the additional fees listed in the table. Fees for the UKVI vary a little, and IELTS Life Skills exam costs are a little lower. Fees for computer-based and paper-based IELTS are the same.

Which test should I take?
You should decide which test to take based on what you want to do. IELTS can assist you with several life decisions, including migrating abroad, landing your dream job, or enhancing your English language abilities. Therefore, check which one is appropriate for you before scheduling your test.
IELTS Academic
IELTS Academic evaluates your level of English language competence to see whether it is appropriate for an academic setting. It examines your readiness for training or study and includes elements of academic language.
Take this IELTS Academic test if you want to:
- Study at an undergraduate level or postgraduate level anywhere in the world
- Apply for a Student Route visa (Tier 4) at a university which is a Student route (Tier 4) Sponsor in the UK
IELTS General Training
IELTS General Training assesses English language competence of an individual in a real-world setting. The assessments and tasks replicate social and professional settings.
Take this test if you want to:
- Work or undertake work-related training in an English-speaking country
- Migrate to an English-speaking country
Date and Frequency
IELTS test dates are offered upto 4 times in a month making a total of 48 fixed dates in one calendar year. The availability of IELTS dates in India may vary for Academic and General IELTS.
Center and Admit Card
The IELTS Exam is offered at more than 50 locations across India. No admit card is provided for the IELTS examination.
Result
IELTS Exam results are released 10 calendar days after the paper-based exam and 5-7 calendar days for the computer based test. The candidate will receive only ONE original Test Report form (TRF).
Score Reporting
A candidate may request to have upto 5 additional TRFs sent to the receiving institutions (universities, professional bodies, etc) within 1 month of taking the IELTS test. TRFs sent by courier will be sent via DHL and students will be charged accordingly. If the receiving institution accepts electronic submission of scores then that can be arranged through the IDP IELTS office free of charge.
